NJH SCIENCE ENDANGERED SPECIES PROJECT

WHAT:

Students have been working together in teams to research an endangered species and an organization that is working to restore that endangered species. The students have worked hard to use their research to create an awareness video to raise money to send to the organization they researched.

WHY:

As an 8th grade class we cover standards about ecology. We use endangered species as a way to learn about ecology. The students have researched about an endangered species and made a video in an attempt to raise awareness for the endangered species and to raise money for the organizations that are already helping the endangered species. The majority of our students are not able to travel to the area of the world where most of the endangered species are located to help, so we are using the resources we have available to us to make a difference. 100% of the money we receive from this fundraiser will be sent directly to organizations that are currently helping the different endangered species.

HOW:

Students have combined science, english, math, and social studies classes to complete this project. Students have worked during science and english to research and gather information about the species they chose and the species' ecosystem. They also planned and created their video in science and english. In social studies, the students researched the organizations that are currently helping their species. In math, the students used information they collected to create graphs and graphics for their videos.

HOW:

Although this project is based out of the students' Science class, they have also worked to complete additional portions of this project in English, Math, and Social Studies. Students have worked during Science and English to research and gather information about the species they chose and the species' ecosystem. They also planned and created their video in Science and English. In Social Studies, the students researched organizations that are currently assisting the endangered species. After vetting the organizations, students chose one to donate to. In Math, the students used information they collected to create graphs to observe trends in their data.
